Yogurt, please

We Canadians are hungry for yogurt. According to StatsCanada, our yogurt consumption more than doubled from 1998 to 2008 - from 2.4 litres to 5.4 litres of yogurt per person per year. It was just .03 of a litre in 1960!

According to Dannon, the largest maker of yogurt in the world, Canadians eat twice as much yogurt as our American friends.

Since we love our yogurt, perhaps you'd like to try making your own. It's easy. There are many websites explaining the process. You might start with this one: Yogurt Everyday.

When I make yogurt, I buy Dairyland milk (it's from Saskatchewan cows) and a good, plain natural yogurt (not low-fat) with live cultures. I leave the yogurt to incubate on the counter in an insulated soup thermos. Make a couple batches at home until you find a process that works best for you. Let me know how it goes...

Good Grapes!

Want to grow and stomp your own grapes? Learn the art of growing and breeding grapes for the prairies with Tyler Kaban, a passionate grape breeder at the University of Saskatchewan.

I recently paid a visit to Tyler and his grapes (since it was winter, in the greenhouse at the U of S). Those are his grapes in the picture. Tyler is looking for folks around the province willing to grow his grape varieties to see which ones do best in real prairie conditions.

Crowning the King of Kovbasa

The 2011 King of the Kovbasa was crowned last night in Saskatoon. After a blind taste test and secret ballot (by 500 discerning palates) the unanimous winner was the koubasa made by the Saskatoon Co-op Marketplace on Attridge!


It was also my personal favourite. My top three included the koubasa from Emco Meats in Saskatoon and the Smokehaus in Martensville. Which, I might add, are also my personal favourite koubasa when I'm not blind taste-testing.

It's always a colourful sight as great platters of sausage are ceremoniously carried into the hall by members of the Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble dressed in traditional Ukrainian folk costumes, accompanied by lively accordion music and rhythmic clapping from the crowd.

This was the tenth annual King of the Kovbasa -- definitely a highlight of the culinary calendar in Saskatoon!

Menus Gone Local
